How to Care for Your Coconut Soy Candle (and Make It Last Longer)

You've just lit your coconut soy candle for the first time — the scent is beautiful, the flame is steady, and the moment feels just right. But how you care for your candle from this point on will determine how long that experience lasts.

Here's everything you need to know to get the most out of every burn.

1. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn

Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about 6mm (¼ inch). A long or mushroomed wick causes uneven burning, excess soot, and a flame that's too large. A simple wick trimmer — or even nail scissors — works perfectly.

2. Let It Burn Long Enough on the First Use

The first burn is the most important. Allow your candle to burn until the entire top layer of wax has melted to the edges of the jar — this is called a full melt pool. For most of our candles, this takes 2–3 hours.

Skipping this step causes tunneling, where the wax burns straight down the center, wasting the wax along the sides and shortening the life of your candle significantly.

3. Never Burn for More Than 4 Hours at a Time

Extended burns cause the wick to become too long and the jar to overheat. Keep each burn session to a maximum of 4 hours, then let the candle cool completely before relighting.

4. Keep It Away from Drafts

Fans, open windows, and air conditioning can cause your candle to flicker and burn unevenly. Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts for a clean, even burn every time.

5. Store It Properly Between Uses

Coconut soy wax is natural and sensitive to temperature. Store your candle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve the scent and prevent the wax from discoloring or softening.

6. Know When to Stop

Stop burning your candle when about 1cm of wax remains at the bottom. Burning past this point can cause the jar to overheat. Once finished, the jar can be cleaned out and repurposed — it makes a beautiful small planter or desk organizer.

Why Coconut Soy Wax?

Our candles are made with a blend of coconut and soy wax — both natural, renewable, and cleaner-burning than paraffin. This means a longer burn time, a stronger scent throw, and a healthier environment for you and your home.

With proper care, our coconut soy candles can last up to 40–50 hours. That's weeks of your favorite scent, one mindful burn at a time.
